Mission Bay Golf Course
Improving the Golf course and connecting it with the community
Mission Bay Golf Course is a fun, 18 hole executive course. From the longest tees it presents 2,719 yards of golf for a par of 58. The course was designed by Ted Robinson, ASGCA and opened in 1957. This facility includes a driving range and expansive practice area. This course is a beautiful feature of Mission Bay Park and is used by many San Diegans as a novice friendly opportunity to learn and improve your game. This facility is used by approximately 20 High School girl and boy teams for practice and play. It is the home course for the Mission Bay High School golf team. This is one of the busiest city golf facilities and offers day and nighttime golf and practice. A course restaurant has been attempted several times but has never proven viable.
Improving the Course and Surrounding Facilities
The Mission Bay Gateway project retains, enhances, and expands this local treasure. The driving range will be lengthened from approximately 220 yards to over 300 yards and with some rearrangement of the holes the course could be lengthened several hundred yards as well. The chipping and sand trap practice area would be expanded. Parking, restaurant, pro-shop, office, and check-in structure is moved to the southwest to free up the space needed.
There is the potential to add a mini golf course in the green belt to the south of the Campland Village. Many community members remember fondly using the mini golf facility that was a part of the Mission Bay Golf Course and which was abandoned after falling into disrepair.
A New Restaurant with Banquet and Meeting Halls
A new course restaurant/banquet/meeting hall will be located adjacent to the golf course and aquatic facility. With outdoor and indoor dining on the east and west sides, this new facility will serve golfers, swimmers, Campland visitors and the nearby tennis club. Diners on the east will have serene views of the golf course. Diners on the west will relax overlooking the lagoon pool. The Gateway will be able to host small conventions, weddings, parties, dances, concerts, and community meetings.
The restaurant is intentionally placed on the bike/pedestrian path so as to become a "way station" for the pedestrian and cyclist travelers around Mission Bay park. Those out for a walk or bike ride might stop and enjoy lunch or dinner as part of their outing.
A New Ampitheatre
At one time outdoor concerts were common occurrences at the golf course. Campland currently has regular and popular outdoor concerts. Mission Bay Park has no outdoor concert or theatrical venue. An amphitheater can bring those staying at guest housing and community members and regional visitors together at a beautiful venue.
MBG proposes a 500 seat natural service amphitheater with a stage and technology for high quality concerts and theatrical events. These could be revenue generating. This venue could also be utilized by Mission Bay High School that currently has very robust musical and theatrical programs. Parking would be shared with adjacent venues.
The proximity of all these facilities and the variety of events possible will make this facility and the nearby village a hub of activity, a gathering place and watering hole for all who are coming to enjoy Mission Bay and the enhanced facilities within the Gateway Project morning, day, and evening.
